The Listener 2.0

Slow news day but this was a nice video. I love the Skool Daze parody. Alicia looks good but I have to say this album didn’t do much for me. It was nice but her last one was definitely the best. Anyway check it out and let me know what you think.

I saw this over at Billboard so its not a rumour. What is it about artist that makes them want to leave DTP? I’m not sure but Valentino has had a “not-so-bad” career. Well…maybe that’s the reason he wanted to bounce. reports: Calling the departure amicable, the singer/songwriter describes his two-album DTP/Def Jam tenure as a “great stepping stone and learning experience. I look at this as my going off to college. It was time for me to step out on my own and show the world who Bobby Valentino the artist really is.”

Bobby V will be releasing a 6 song digital EP sometime soon. I’m sure it will be aight.

Solange has some good producer’s on this new one. Pharrell, Cee-lo, Bilal, Raphael Saadiq, and Mark Ronson. I took a look at the track list and there’s a song on there called “Champagnechronicnightcap” not sure what that’s about but it sounds like she’s been smokin that good cali. Anyway the album is due out August 26 which means she has a summer joint coming out soon. I’ll keep you posted.

The AP reported today that Jordin Sparks is taking a leave from Alicia Key’s tour because of vocal problems. She has been performing non stop since American Idol and it’s taking a bad toll on her vocal chords. She is scheduled to get back on the road in a few weeks but is considering cancelling the tour all together.

This is unfortunate. Not only that she’s not feeling well but sustainablility after American Idol is scarce in the music biz and this may tour have put her over the top. She may need a comeback album or single after this one. If she rest for too long…people may forget about her.

Hope you feel better Jordin.

I may have wrote about this already but I just read over at billboard that he was trying something new because he was “bored” with his regular sound. I think it’s cool that he puts out an album every year. It’s about time we have an R&B artist, besides R Kelly of course, that works on a consistent basis.

I can’t wait to hear what’s different on this one. Although I can’t say I’m tired of his normal sound. Neyo is currently on tour with Alicia Keys and Jordin Sparks so I’m sure that’s going to be a good show. I’ll keep you posted if anything else pops up.

This is really unfortunate reports: The incident happened Monday in a home located in the 180000 block of Bradford on the city’s east side. Police say there was a rap battle, in which participants come up with insulting rhymes aimed at their competitors. Police say 28-year-old Antoine Tramble became angry at something a 27-year-old rapper said, so he left the home and then returned with a gun. Tramble opened fire, killing the man, police said. The victim’s name has not been released.

Ya know a man’s pride can be his worst enemy. Often rap artist talk about gun play, especially in rap battles, and even though its not a good thing to hear you know in the back of your mind that no one is really going to move forward with the threats they’ve made. I guess this was a different story. I wonder what homeboy said that made this dude go grab his gun. My condolences to the victim’s family.

Many of you may not know Trevonte the Great, a hip hop loving mc from Milwaukee, but he and I go way back and he wanted me to hear some of his new music. Here’s a review and some tracks for you to check out. I got the chance to hear some of his new stuff and I particularly like the following two tracks.

Dude I’m Great:This joint was a good one. The first verse was a lil off but it picked up in the second and third. I love the way he uses swing style (for all my jazz rookies that’s long, short, long) against the beat. That creates a very nice fit in any tune. The content is awesome because he talks about how great he is without using a drug influence.

She Aint: This was another tune that deserves mention. Tre talkes about his girlfriend and how she’s not his “bitch”, “hoe”, or any other words people try to make sound good for their woman. Another use of the long short style adds color to this poetic ode.

Shortcomings:There were a few short stops on this LP. Although Tre is from Milwaukee he currently resides in Arkansas so its natural for him to have a southern influence (not my taste but it works for most). Most of the beats include the claps and 808 bass which don’t do much for me personally. Tre also has a style similar to lil wayne (at least the way he pronounces certain words anyway). This can only go so far before it becomes a turn off.

Overall I thought the LP was good. Tre will get better with time and I’m excited to hear some more work from him. Check out his myspace page at
